Welcome to Early Years at Longacre

At Longacre we understand and celebrate that every child is unique. Our wonderful Pre-School setting provides a wide range of environments that ignite the children’s interests and thirst for learning.

The value of play in a young child’s development is vital. We provide many different opportunities for play to support the children’s curiosity whilst encouraging exploration through building, singing, dancing, climbing and being creative. But most of all, we nurture every child to ensure self-confidence and independence whilst forming secure emotional attachments with the other children and our staff.

The Pre-School at Longacre is made up of one Nursery class and two Kindergarten classes, all housed across three purpose-built classrooms in the Pre-School block with direct access to their own separate playground. The children also enjoy access to all the main school’s facilities including our own woodland and a modern Sports Hall and Creative Arts studio.

The Nursery and Kindergarten children wear their own Longacre Pre-School uniform, belong to one of the four school Houses and are full members of the school community, making the transition to formal schooling at Reception much easier.

Nursery (2 to 3 years)

Our Nursery team have a combined experience of over 30 years working with small children and every effort is made to ensure that the children feel comfortable in their new environment.

Children are able to join our Nursery from the age of 2 (*provided they will be turning 3 by the 31st August of that academic year).

Children start in Nursery with a minimum of four sessions per week. However, we work closely with parents to ensure the child is able to cope with the number of chosen sessions and parents have a choice in selecting the sessions which suit their own requirements.
There is one full-time Nursery Teacher and two part-time Teaching Assistants. The Nursery staff also work closely with the Kindergarten staff and the children enjoy ‘free-flow’ time when both classes come together.

The children have access to the very best quality teaching staff and enjoy specialist lessons such as Music, P.E. and Forest School. We provide planned play, both outdoors and indoors, in a stimulating environment, with a balance of teacher directed and child-initiated activities. We use lots of praise, encouragement and above all, have fun.

The Nursery children participate in the annual Early Years Nativity performance, take part in the school’s Sports Day and at the end of the year perform their own class assembly.

Kindergarten (3 to 4 years)

We have two Kindergarten classes at Longacre with four full-time staff. Attendance in Kindergarten is normally part-time with six sessions being the minimum attendance. Our aim would be to slowly increase the number of sessions attended throughout the year, in preparation for full-time attendance in Reception.

The curriculum is very flexible at this stage and the children will be following an individual programme of learning, which will be closely monitored and recorded by the teacher.

The Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum is followed, with the emphasis on first hand learning through well-structured play activities and each day is different. Specialist lessons such as Music, Forest School and P.E. are spread throughout the week and are taught by specialist teaching staff in the dedicated classrooms.

Kindergarten children participate in the annual Early Years Nativity performance, take part in the school’s Sports Day and at the end of the year perform their own class assembly.
